Shah I Zinda

05 october - Samarkand, Uzbekistan - Janneke

Visiting grave yards is always a thing when I am travelling. I was impressed by Evita’s Recoleta, but this small alley called Shah-i-Zinda hit the charts pretty good. It is quite difficult to figure out the many rulers and emperors lived and ruled from when to when and are probably all related to each other or the prophet Muhammed. Leaving that for what it was, the alley is more know as Mausoleum Alley. There are around 20 mausoleums aligned up here all glittery and glamoury tiled with the remarkable blue colour that they like to use so much. It is blue, I’m told, because then you are closer to the sky, closer to heaven.
